The Canada Research Chair in Music and Politics is delighted to announce that
the multimedia virtual exhibition “Sur l’air de la liberté: Chansons de
résistantes dans les prisons nazies” is now online.
It documents a collection of 19 contrafact resistance songs that were invented in French and
German prisons between 1941 and 1944, and collected after the war by librarian and
Resistance fighter Yvonne Oddon. In addition to various sources from the period (scores,
recordings, pages from Oddon’s manuscript, etc.), the exhibition includes musical
reconstructions by singer Catherine Harrison-Boisvert and pianist Monica Han, thus bringing
to life these songs of courage and hope in the face of oppression.
The virtual exhibition can be visited here: https://chansonsresistantes.crcmp.org/
